The Rich Man and the Beggar

The rich man faired sumptuously,
Fine clothes, servants and more;
But just outside at his front gate,
Sat a poor beggar full of sores.

The rich man said to his servants,
Prepare for me a sumptuous meal;
But the poor old beggar he pleaded,
Give me your crumbs my stomach to fill.

The rich man had the best of doctors,
If ever he was to get sick;
But the only comfort the beggar had,
Was when the dogs his sores they would lick.

Then one day came the death angel,
For this poor old beggar he came;
And then it was shortly thereafter,
For the rich man came the same.

While living his life here on this earth,
The rich man he surely did thrive;
But oh what a shock it was to his soul,
When in hell he lifted up his eyes.

While living on earth that poor beggar,
Was as poor as he could be;
But when he passed through death’s valley,
From all his sufferings he was then set free.

From sickness, sorrow and hunger,
Into Abraham’s bosom the beggar came;
But the rich man who faired so sumptuously,
Is now in hell’s eternal flame.

On the other side of the fixed gulf,
The rich man from hell he could see;
That beggar sitting with Abraham,
And he is as well as he can be.

The rich man cried, “Father Abraham,
Would you send Lazarus please?
I ask for just one drop of water,
Please have some mercy on me.”

Abraham said, “There’s a great gulf fixed,
Lazarus cannot come from here to there;
You rejected your soul’s need of salvation,
Now eternal torments you must bear.”

Then Abraham said, “Son, remember,
On the earth good things you did receive;
But you left out of life the most important -
Your need of a Savior you did not believe.

Now it’s thirst, flames, torment and remembrance,
For the rich man throughout all eternity;
Not one hope of any deliverance,
God will never hear this man’s plea.

Now the beggar has become the rich man,
Comforted in his eternal home;
Singing shouting and worshiping Jesus,
As Christ sits upon His throne.

This message we find in the Bible,
There’s a reason this story is told;
What good if the world you should profit,
But then end up losing your soul?
